Water Conservation Tips and Tricks

With temperatures rising, keeping an eye on your water usage helps the environment and our water protection at the ranch because all of the water comes from wells. Small shifts in your daily routine—especially outdoors where usage spikes—can make a massive impact. By being intentional with how you manage your home you can stay refreshed without being wasteful.

Here are a few ways to save now and during the summer:

  • Check for silent leaks: Test your toilets by putting a few drops of food coloring in the tank; if color seeps into the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

  • Sweep, don't spray: Use a broom instead of a hose to clean off sidewalks, patios, and driveways. Do not wash cars or trailers with water; please stick to dry dusting the outside of vehicles.

  • Shorten your showers: Aiming for five minutes or less can save thousands of gallons over the season.

  • Water at dawn or dusk: Timing your sprinklers for the early morning or late evening prevents water from evaporating in the midday heat.

Please report ALL leaks, or standing water, to the office IMMEDIATELY. Our water supply is extremely limited, needs constant monitoring and maintenance, and needs to be protected. We cannot accomplish this without your cooperation and consideration.

Sign ♫ Sign ♫ Everywhere a sign ♫ Blockin’ out the scenery ♫ Breakin’ my mind ♫ Do this, don’t do that ♫

Can’t you read the sign?

This is the time of year when the trash compactor and recycling bins are used to their full potential and then some. We call it, “Garbageddon,” short for Garbage Armageddon. It is absolutely amazing the voluminous amount of rubbish produced by our community. The compactor – along with a little help from our maintenance crew – tries to keep the situation under control, but it needs your help as well.

Is a sign necessary to remind everyone to tie their garbage bags before they go into the dumpster? That’s why most kitchen bags have those colourful drawstrings! Even the repurposed grocery bags need to be tied closed. Why? It’s so loose garbage won’t blow in the breeze when the truck collects on Tuesday and Friday mornings and litter the surrounding area.

Is a sign required to ask people not to dump loose trash into the compactor? Shangri La Ranch may not be in Oklahoma but it’s still where the wind comes sweepin’ down the plain! Bag your discards and food scraps so they stay put until collected.

Is a sign essential to tell you not to leave kitchen slop in the trailer after the compactor door is locked? Lots of wild critters share our community – including coyotes, javelinas and deer – that will forage through the bags looking for food. Let’s not give them the opportunity to tear open and create a mess as they have in the past.

Is a sign needed to suggest bagging Styrofoam before tossing it away? When those packing blocks and peanuts break apart, all those little plastic beads drift into the surroundings and are impossible to recollect. After unpacking your new whatchamacallit, secure the Styrofoam pieces in a tied trash bag. Is a sign vital to advocate recycling bottles, cans and cardboard? These items take up a lot of space in the dumpster when they should be going into the recyclable bins. We all want to keep our planet free from pollution as much as possible; let’s start by being better stewards of our local environment.

Is a sign important to outline what is and is not recyclable? Guess what – there is a sign right on the front of each of the bins! We shouldn’t need to post more signs than there are already. Unfortunately, many of them are ignored but they are still there to help guide all of us to work together as a community.

And I made up my own little sign ♫ I said ♫“Thank you Lord for thinkin’ ’bout me ♫ I’m alive and doin’ fine!”

Cajun Honey Butter Salmon

Ingredients

    • 2 tablespoons olive oil
    • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
    • salt to taste
    • 4 tablespoons butter
    • 2 tablespoons honey
    • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
    • 2 cloves garlic minced
    • juice of ½ lemon
    • fresh parlsey chopped, for garnish
    • lemon wedges for serving
    • black sesame seeds for garnish

    Instructions

    • Pat the salmon fillets dry with paper towels. Rub each fillet with olive oil and season generously with Cajun seasoning, and salt if needed.
    • Heat a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the salmon fillets skin-side up and sear for about 3 minutes until they form a nice crust. Flip the salmon over so the skin side is down and cook for another 2 minutes.
    • While the salmon is cooking, in a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the honey, soy sauce, and minced garlic. Stir until well combined and simmer for a couple of minutes. Remove from heat and squeeze in the lemon juice.
    • Pour the honey butter sauce over the salmon fillets. Continue to cook the salmon, spooning the sauce over regularly, for another 3-5 minutes.
    • Once the salmon is cooked, garnish with freshly chopped parsley, lemon wedges, and sprinkle black sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

    Notes

    1. Pat the salmon dry to help the seasoning stick and create a nice crust.
    2. Use fresh lemon juice for the best flavor in the honey butter sauce.
    3. If the salmon is too spicy, reduce the amount of Cajun seasoning.
    4. Serve immediately for the best taste and texture
